Welcome to Houston’s Third Annual Amputation Prevention Summit
This educational event will highlight the urgent nature of the diabetes epidemic, specifically the prevalence of PAD and diabetic foot ulcers/injuries. It will also discuss ways healthcare professionals can improve their practices in order to reduce lower extremity amputations.
Diabetes is among the top ten leading causes of death in Texas, and the leading cause of nontraumatic lower extremity amputation. In 2014, the state of Texas totaled $340 million dollars in hospitalization charges as a result of amputation as the primary cause of hospitalization.
Between 2000 and 2010, the prevalence of diabetes in our state increased by 56.6 percent and in 2014, approximately 1.8 million adults in Texas were living with diabetes. With the future incidence of diabetes projected to rise to 550 million people worldwide by the year 2030, the concept of limb salvage has become an international and national trend.
Persons with diabetes have a risk of a leg amputation that is 15-40 times greater than for a person without diabetes. Within two to four years of unilateral limb loss, one-third of all patients lose the other leg. Sadly, only about 50 percent of amputees survive within five years following a leg amputation.
Target Audience
This program is designed to address the educational needs of those that frequently interact with patients at risk for major amputation due to complications of diabetes and peripheral artery disease. The target audience includes physicians from the fields of podiatry, vascular intervention, internal and family medicine, infectious disease, plastic surgery, as well as nurses from various care settings including home health, post-acute care, outpatient clinics and inpatient care.
